Ovarian Cysts: A Practical Guide

Ovarian Cysts: A Practical Guide

Online until December 31st 2026

In this 45-minute presentation, gynaecologist Dr Alison Bryant-Smith offers a clear, practical guide to the investigation and management of ovarian cysts across the reproductive lifespan. A short multiple-choice quiz follows to reinforce the key clinical concepts discussed.

Ovarian cysts are a common clinical finding, often detected incidentally or in the context of non-specific abdominal or pelvic symptoms. Their management in primary care requires careful clinical assessment, appropriate use of imaging, and a sound understanding of when specialist referral is indicated.

This elearning module will provide an up-to-date, practical approach for GPs, and other health professionals, in the investigation and management of ovarian cysts across the reproductive lifespan. It will cover the differentiation between benign and potentially malignant cysts, the role of history and examination, the utility and limitations of ultrasound, and the appropriate use of tumour markers including CA125 and HE4. Special emphasis will be placed on tailored management strategies for pre- and post-menopausal women, risk stratification using tools such as the Risk of Malignancy Index (RMI), and O-RADS, and current best practices in surveillance versus surgical referral. Participants will leave this session with greater confidence in identifying which ovarian cysts can be safely monitored in primary care, which require further specialist input, and how to communicate management plans effectively to patients.
